That's a little like asking what kind of paint to buy because you just
got an easel and would like to produce a Rembrandt!
Digitizing a photograph is one of the most difficult and
time-consuming things you could do. Designs created on your computer
with a paint or draw program tend to be much more readily digitizable.
They have only a few colors rather than the millions that are in EVERY
photo. While there are some digitizing programs that will take a
photo as input, I've never seen one that can do justice to a photo.
I would start by obtaining a few ready-made designs - there are tens
of thousands of them, free and otherwise - just to see how the
stitching process works.
There are some auto-digitizing programs around. They work best with
cartoon-like images. Software prices vary from free (for which you
don't get very much, obviously) to thousands of dollars. Depending on
what model Janome system you have, you may also require a device to
transfer your designs from the computer to the machine.
If you google for 'Embroidery Software' you'll get some idea of what's
out there and what each of the hundred or more programs can do. Then
you can come back here (or to alt.sewing.mach-embroider) to ask for
specific opinions. Some fully functional 30-day trial software is
available from manufacturers; you may also have heard that software is
occasionally available right here.
As an aside, printing images on fabric is easy and the results are
great. Your local stationery or computer store will have packs of
paper that produce transfers or some that have fabric attached to
paper backing.
