That response addressed what you download (receiving). It's a
different set of concerns than when you're Uploading (sending).
In a word, you can't protect yourself completely. Using software and
news services that don't advertise your IP address or email address is
a start, but depending on the jurisdiction, the offended party's
willingness to pursue the matter, and the extent of the offense, it is
always technically possible to be traced. Whether it is economically
feasible or not is another question. An occasional design or two would
probably fly under the radar. A complete collection from a major
vendor could raise flags.
To see what information is associated with posts, look at the headers.
Each newsreader client has a different means of displaying these
headers. In Agent, with a message displayed, just tap the 'H' key to
toggle the header display. In Mozilla/Thunderbird, press Ctrl-U. Or
Google for Display Headers and your specific newsreader.
But remember that an adequate warrant can theoretically force your ISP
and your News Server to reveal further information. Some ISP's and
NewsServer organizations are more responsive than others. There are
also 'anonymizer' accounts that can add another level or three to the
trace procedures.
